2019 will mark the 400 years since Africans were first brought to Jamestown, VA settlement in 1619 by the Dutch as Slaves. They were brought to the Americas to aid in the very profitable agricultural industry during the 17ththrough 19th centuries. This atrocious system was introduced during the colonial days of America and continued through America’s own independence from England. The Chattel Slavery system lasted through the Westward expansion up to, and was the cause of, the American Civil War (1861-1865). An estimated 4 million slaves were freed after the Civil War, but the effects of slavery reverberated from the Reconstruction period (1865-1877), through the Civil rights apex a century later (1960s). Some consider that this disturbing past still echoes even today. Jazz Legend bassist/composer, Avery Sharpe will remember and tell the story of this 400 years of America’s history through art. He will compose music in memory of this historical mark, which will have the musical influence of the Africans, African-Americans and Europeans. The music will be heavily laden with the overtones of Spirituals, Gospel, Blues, and Jazz and Classical idioms. Sharpe was a longtime member of Jazz piano great McCoy Tyner Trio for over 20 years, with over 20 recordings with Tyner. His performing, recording, and composition credits reads like a who’s who in Jazz. He has worked with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Wynton Marsalis.
